The power of mindfulness in nature

Published: September 27, 2024

A group of taiohi participated in the mindful walking group, led by our Whētu Marewa team—part of Real.

Whetū Marewa is our mental health support service in Rotorua. The name Whetū Marewa reflects the taiohi this service supports and the potential they have to lead healthy and happy lives.

The group met for 10 weeks in 2024, with an aim to connect with each other, the nature, and learning mindfulness.

They began with a short breathing exercise, followed by a walk through the Whakarewarewa Forest Park (also known as The Redwoods).

As they walked, they were encouraged to use all their senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch—to become more aware of their surroundings.

The group often paused to admire the beauty of a flower or the sound of a bird chirping. The taiohi were encouraged to be completely in the present moment, leaving behind their worries and stress.

As they continued their walks, they bonded with each other and with te taiao beneath their feet.

The group learned to identify native trees and watched as a giant snake of colourful painted named Rocco grew a little bit more after their visit.

The confidence gained from the group led to one taiohi joining a Muay Thai class, while another landed a part-time job!

Two other taiohi joined other groups run by Whētu Marewa.

The most surprising outcome was when one of the young girls started selling her handmade crochet toys and was planning to open an online shop.

As the 10 weeks came to an end, the group celebrated their journey with at Kuirau Park Footbaths in Rotorua. They immersed their tired feet in the warm water, feeling grateful for the journey they had just completed.

The mindful walking group not only helped these young people clear their minds and improve their focus, but also brought positive changes in their lives. The transformation in these young minds was truly remarkable!

The power of nature and mindfulness contributed to a renewed sense of confidence and well-being. It was a reminder of the fact that sometimes, a mindful walk in nature can help recharge our mind, body, and soul.
